Introduction

Mechanical Engineering is one of the three important disciplines that were established at the same time of the construction of Kunming University of Science and Technology. It has become one of the well recognized, distinctive key disciplines in Yunnan Province. We started offering the Master of Mechanical Design and Theory degree (MSc) since 1965, Master of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation degree (MSc) since 1987, Master of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering degree (MSc) since 2000. From 2003, we have started enrolling PhD students in Mechanical Design and Theory. In 2009, postdoctoral program of Mechanical Engineering was approved. From 2011, we started offering the Ph. D. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

At present, the subjects of mechanical and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechanical and electrical integration have been awarded the provincial key disciplines; the mechanical engineering and automation has also become national recognized and provincial key professional subject. The faculty has 84 full-time academic staffs, including 24 professors, 40 associate professors, 8 doctoral supervisors.

Owing to the continuous contributions of our staffs made during the past decades, and the great support and leadership of our distinguished scientists (e.g. Professor Qu Weide), our research work on mechanical vibration has been recognized to stand on the national leading level. In particular, the faculty has been invited to edit and update the national mechanical vibration manuals during the past decades. Over the past five years, the faculty has been awarded more than 200 research projects with the total research funds more than 100 million RMB. Our staffs have been awarded more than 100 national patents, more than 20 national and provincial research awards. Our staffs have published more than 100 high-quality articles, more than 30 monographs and textbooks. Moreover, a number of our research outputs have been successfully transferred to some of our long-term industrial partners, e.g. China Yun Copper Group Co., Limited,Yunnan Tin Industry Group Co.,Jinchuan Group Co., Limited and other large enterprises, which have created significant social impact and economic benefits.
