1. Introduction

Materials Science and Engineering(MSE) is one of the traditional advantage disciplines in Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST). MSE is rated as A class of key constructive disciplines of Yunnan Province, with the provincial key programmes of Materialogy, Materials Processing Engineering and national rising strategic programmes of Functional Materials. During about 10 years of development, MSE has developed an advantage structure in the integration of manufacturing, teaching and researching, and gradually explores its unique development pattern in terms of outstanding discipline characteristics, advanced research fields, significant scientific achievements.

Post-doctoral research station of Materials Science and Engineering was established in 2001, situated in the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering (FMSE). Now it has become as senior talentscultivating base and scientific and technological innovation center derived from a wide variety of research resources in FMSE. FMSE owns several provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, such as National Engineering Laboratory of Advanced Metal Solidification Forming and Equipment Technology Yunnan, Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials of Precious-Nonferrous Metals, Education Ministry of China, Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials of Yunnan Province, Engineering Center of Advanced Materials Forming & Manufacture of Yunnan Province, National Engineering Center of Advanced Metal Iron & Steel (Part of Kunming University of Science and Technology),etc.Moreover, the fixed assets of FMSE costs nearly 100 million Yuan, the laboratory covers an area of 20000 m², the amount of large-scale scientific instruments is beyond 50 by now.

There are currently more than 130 staffs in FMSE, 104 of them are full-time faculties, which includes 39 full professors, 40 associate professors, and all the full professors possess the qualification for Ph.D supervisors. Among them, 1 professor has been elected as national talent in the “National Pacesetter Project”, 1 professor has been nominated for “New Century Talent Supporting Project” by the ministry of education.Another one has been awarded as the national science and technology innovation of entrepreneurial talent.6 faculties as the leaders and 7 as the reserve talents are voted as the Young and middle-aged academic and technical elitists of Yunnan province.

In recent 3 years, FMSE has undertaken 50 national scientific research projects, over 100 projects ranging from provincial and ministerial-level ones and the enterprise authorized items, the funding for ongoing research amounts to 24 million yuan. There are more than 400 academic papers indexed by SCI published and over 140 issued patents obtained. Based on them, FMSE has received 6 prizes of provincial and ministerial-level Science & Technology Award, won the first prize for progress in Science and Technology of Yunnan Province, it has also successfully set up 3 academic innovative team affiliated to Science & Technology bureau of Yunnan Province, 1 academic innovative team affiliated to Education bureau of Yunnan Province and 7 school-level innovative research team.

Besides that, FMSE continues to expand in-depth cooperation with the industrial enterprises. FMSE and Zhejiang Tianxing Group Co., Ltd. have collaborated to establish an engineering center for copper processing. One R & D platform of new Material for internal combustion engine has been built under joint efforts of both FMSE and Yunnan Yunnei Power Group Co., Ltd. More importantly, Yunnan titanium-based applied products engineering technology center co-founded by FMSE and Yunnan Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. has been approved by Science & Technology bureau of Yunnan Province.
