2017 Enrollment Guide to the ‘Belt and Road’ Post-Doctoral Fellows (KUST)

Ⅰ.Introduction of KUST

Officially founded in 1954, Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST) is the largest university as well as the only polytechnic university across Yunnan province. As a comprehensive university with multiple disciplines, KUST offers programs covering engineering, science, management, economics, medicine, law, arts, philosophy, agriculture, and education. KUST plays an important role in the metallurgy industry of China and regional economy. Mining engineering, metallurgical engineering, material science and engineeringand environmental science and engineering are featured disciplines of KUST. The subjects of engineering and material science in KUST are ranked by ESI as the top 1% worldwide. The subject of metallurgical engineering is ranked the 4th in China, and 7 other subjects ranked top 10 nationwide. Early in 2015, Chinese President XI Jinping commented KUST as a “famous university in China” in his speech made in Yunnan.

KUST has established academic partnerships with over 60 higher education institutions in more than 30 countries including USA, UK, Germany and France. As a representative institution of Chinese universities, KUST has been playing an active role in the cooperation of technical and administrative personnel training, joint research, technology transfer, and people mobility etc., especially in the cooperation with the neighboring south-east Asia and south Asia countries, and in the regional cooperation platforms, including the mechanisms of China-ASEAN cooperation, Lancang Mekong (GMS) Cooperation, and also the other regional cooperation mechanisms such as China-EU cooperation, Asia-Europe higher education cooperation programs.

The post-doctoral programs in KUST started from 1998. Presently KUST has 8 Post-doctor stations authorized by the central government, with the programs respectively in mining engineering, geological resources and engineering, metallurgical engineering, material science and engineering, mechanics, environmental science and engineering, mechanical engineering, and management science and engineering, established in 7 faculties or schools of KUST.

II. Ⅱ.Recruitment Plan

With the 8 post-doctor stations, KUST welcomes international post-doctoral fellows (IPDF) every year. IPDF is encouraged to conduct interdisciplinary and innovative research based on his/her own fields. III.  Ⅲ.Admission Requirements

1. Doctor degree obtained within the past 3 years, excellent academic and social activity records, age under 35.

2. Meet the admission requirements of IPDF and commit to work full-time.

3. The research area matches with that of the supervisor professor and the relevant KUST department, and the academic level meet with the required criteria.

IV. Ⅳ. Admission Procedures

1. KUST is open for IPDE application all year round except for holidays.  The applicant should contact the supervisor professor and submit the application, resume, proof of research achievements, and related supporting document.

2. The supervisor professor shall review and assess the application materials, and make suggestion of acceptance to the post-doctoral office of the faculty or school for approval. With the approval of the faculty or school, the post-doctor office should then report to and work along with the Division of Overseas Cooperation of KUST, to deal with the visa application for entering for entering China, the working permit and residence permit, and the other formalities for non-Chinese citizens, and then report to the Post-doctor Management Office of KUST.

3. The Post-doctors Management Office of KUST will submit the completed application document to the relevant governmental departments for final approval, and settle the issues of the final admission according to the related governmental policies and regulations. V. Ⅴ.Remuneration of IPDF

KUST shall pay each IPDF a total of 112,000 RMB per year, including:

1. Basic living expense of 60,000 RMB(before tax) per year. The payment period is 12 months.

2. Monthly housing allowance of 1,000 RMB (before tax) per month. The payment period shall not exceed 24 months.

3. One-time payment of 40,000 RMB as the fund for academic activities.

4. IPDF shall be rewarded for the research achievements he/she obtained in KUST (see details in Regulations for the ‘Belt and Road’ Post-Doctoral Fellows).


5. KUST IPDFs are encouraged to apply for the Tailor-made Post-doctor Program of Yunnan Province, the program details should refer to the relevant document issued by Yunnan Province.


6. KUST IPDFs are encouraged to apply for various national and/or Yunnan provincial post-doctor funding and related projects.
